第六回は大工の話です。 

私はおじいちゃんが遺してくれた家に住んでいます。4年前に家族と引越をした時には、おじいちゃんが住んでいた時のままでした。短気で用心深かったおじいちゃんは何でもスペアを用意するような人で、ハサミや懐中電灯、殺虫剤などは各部屋に置かれていました。必要な時にパッと取れるようにということだったのでしょう。

 そんなおじいちゃんは役所で働いていたのですが、本当は大工になりたかったのではないか？と思っています。それくらい大工道具がたくさんありました。トンカチやノコギリ、キリにカンナなど家名の焼印が入ったものが大小様々保管されていました。

 今は取り壊してしまいましたが、庭には小さな木造の倉庫があり、そこには道具に加えて角材や板材などが所狭しと置いてありました。薄暗い倉庫内にはお宝でもあるのではと期待したのですが、出てきたのは大量の釘やビス、ワッシャーなどで苦笑してしまいました。ヌンチャクや鎖鎌、さらには舟のオールやイカリが出て来た時にはさすがにびっくりしました。

 おじいちゃんが憧れた？大工という仕事。今は仕事上、かなり身近な存在となりました。インパクトや丸鋸（まるのこ）を使ってあらゆるものを作り、時には解体もする彼らは建設業界に入って日が浅い自分にとっては、業務内容が比較的わかりやすくもあり、作業の様子など見入ってしまう存在です。

 おじいちゃんの代わりではないですが、大工としての醍醐味は何か？と聞いたことがあります。「キッチンのカップボードの取付けを終えてお客様にありがとうって言われた時などはやっていて良かったなあと思います」と彼は答えてくれました。「（大工になろうと思ったのは）現場の雰囲気が好きだからですね。あとは元々、道具を持っていたので」

 あまり笑わないじいちゃんも天国できっとニヤリとしているのではないでしょうか。

 My Grandfather and Carpenters

 I live in a house left by my grandpa. When I moved in with my family four years ago, everything was left the same way when my grandfather lived there for over 40 years. Impatient and cautious, grandpa had a spare for everything, including scissors, flashlights and pesticides in each room.

 Grandpa worked at a government office, but I have suspicion that he really wanted to become a carpenter. He had so many carpenter tools. Various sized hammers, saws, drills, and woodworking planes branded with the family name were stored in a shed.

 Inside that now-demolished wooden warehouse in addition to those tools, were square lumber and planks. I was hoping to find some old artifacts, maybe even some rare coins or something, but what I found were boxes full of nails, screws and washers. I did find a nunchaku, a kusarigama (chain-sickle), and even oars and anchors for boats and had to wonder what my grandma thought when he decided to bring them home.

 Working with carpenters have become quite common due to my work. They make everything (sometimes dismantling them) using impacts and circular saws. New to the construction industry, I frequently find myself glued to the sight of them working.

 I was not asking for grandpa, but I was compelled to ask what their most satisfying moments were. “For example, when the customer thanks me for the cupboard I installed in the kitchen. That makes me happy” he said. “I always liked being at construction sites. Also, I was always surrounded by tools. That’s why I became a carpenter”

 I'm sure grandpa, who doesn't smile too much, is grinning in heaven.
